Matthew Mena '17
Matthew is a First Generation Americana First Generation College Graduate, and more importantly a first generation Morehouse Man.
He comes from a home where his parents are hard working, loving but knew very little about college. His journey was a learning process for both himself and his parents.
His parents who have never left Los Angeles, were worried to send him to another state, a place he'd never been. Then, they met Morehouse Men from GLAMAA , and were so eager to experience Morehouse. He'd never seen his parents so happy to travel.
During his time at Morehouse, his father was sick, which caused him to take a semester off. He credits GLAMAA men such as Dijon Jackson, Reggie Prepetit, Yohance Salmon and many more for taking him under their wing, determined to see him back to school. Matthew felt blessed to have Morehouse Men that took a chance with him, provided a scholarship, helped his transition back into Morehouse, and constantly checked on him. He felt the love of brothers and a support system like no other.
Now, he is a Master's candidate at Loyola Marymount University School of Education, earning his Secondary Education and teacher credential.
Without the help of the Greater Los Angeles Morehouse Alumni Association, he doesn't know where he'd be. Morehouse brothers invest into the young men who seek to earn the title of a Morehouse Man. With their continuous support, he commits the same to future brothers and others.
